By doing that he unfortunatly undermined some of his trademark statements and lyrical subject matter, as poppy hooks and upbeat production don’t go well with comments on the war on terror and 9/11 conspiracy theories. Replay Value: This album ventured out of Lupes typical sound and lyrical style, in search of a more poppy, radiofriendly sound. It gave him even more mainstream attention without him having to pander to the radio. Secondly, it brought him two of his biggest ever hits: Hip-Hop Saved My Life and Superstar. First, it proved that Lupe was more than an one-album wonder and he had way more range than what the showcased on Food & Liquor. It didn’t make Lupe the biggest rapper or anything, but it did do two things. Significance to his career: On the surface this might not seem as essential of a Lupe album as the one that came before it.

It was placed on several end of the year lists by numerous publications, and scored pretty high in reviews. It’s not the easiest of concepts to understand, but multiple listens are rewarded in plenty with a better grasp on the story, and what the individual tracks mean.Ĭritical aclaim: This was generaly seen as a sucsessfull followup to Food & Liquor, but wasn’t considered to be marginaly better than it’s predecessor. This album follows a concept, the tale of three entities: The Cool, The Streets and The Game, each personified through excellent storytelling and conceptual tracks. It took a more dark turn, incorperating dark piano melodies and Lupe himself rapping about killings and world thereatening deseases. It was very different from Food & Liquor in both sound, style and lyrical themes.

Replay Value: One year after his breakout debut project, Lupe dropped The Cool. He instantly became an underground legend after the release of this, and even earned himself a Grammy with the song Daydreamim’. He had already built some buzz prior to this with his feature on Kanye West’s track Touch The Sky of Late Registration, but this album proved that he had the talent to become an entity to be reckoned with within the hiphop community.

Significance to his career: This project catapulted Lupes career to new hights, even earning him his first underground hit Kick, Push. It made Lupe the hiphop critics favourite rapper, in a time where thoughtprovoking hiphop artists were few and far between. It topped many end of the year lists, and recieved widespread praise in numerous magazines. All this creativity and uniqueness, combined with the top-notch lyricism and classy production these topics are matched with, creates a fantastic, lightning-in-a-bottle type listening experience that has an almost endless replay value.Ĭritical aclaim: Critics loved this. While other rappers would talk about killing, sex with hot women and drugs, Lupe would make tracks dedicated to skateboarding, a family where the father has left his son and wife, the project buildings of inner Chicago that turns into a robot, and the most abstract of them all, a dead gangster rising from the dead and walking through the streets where he used to live and the place of his murder. The topics Lupe handled on this project was incredeibly unique. It was unlike anything anyone had heard before, not only sonnicly, but also lyriacly. At a time when Gangsta-rap was at its peak, and the only major rapper that dind’t make that type of music was Kanye, and even he wasn’t at his comercial peak yet, this was a breath of fresh air. Replay value: When this album dropped, it imidiatly stood out as something special.
